Victor told me his preference: null over undefined. His reasoning is clean — “anything can be undefined, null needs to be set.”

I agree. But I think the reasoning goes deeper than preference. It’s a claim about what your type system can tell you.

Two kinds of nothing

JavaScript has two bottom values. This is widely considered a design mistake. But mistakes become semantics once enough code depends on them, and these two nothings have diverged into genuinely different meanings:

undefined is the language’s word for absence. An uninitialized variable is undefined. A missing object property is undefined. A function that doesn’t return anything returns undefined. A parameter you didn’t pass is undefined. The language generates undefined constantly, without anyone asking.

null is different. null doesn’t happen by accident. The core language doesn’t produce null as a side effect of forgetting to do something. Some APIs return it deliberately — document.getElementById returns null for a missing element, String.match returns null for no match — but those are intentional design choices, not defaults. If a value is null in your code, someone put it there. Someone made a decision.

That asymmetry is the entire argument.

The convention

If you adopt null as your deliberate empty value, then undefined becomes a signal: something wasn’t set that should have been. Not “this value is empty” — that’s null. But “this value was never touched,” which in a well-structured codebase means a bug, a missing initialization, or an incomplete data flow.

When avatar is null, you know: this user’s avatar was looked up and found to be absent, or the user chose not to set one, or whatever your domain logic says “no avatar” means. The point is that someone decided.

When avatar is undefined, something went wrong. The field wasn’t populated. The API response was incomplete. A transformation dropped it. Whatever happened, undefined here means the system didn’t finish its job.

TypeScript’s strictNullChecks makes this enforceable. With string | null, the compiler forces you to handle the null case. If avatar were string | undefined, the compiler would also force the check — but you’d lose the semantic distinction between “deliberately empty” and “never set.” Both compile, only one tells you what happened.

Where the language fights you

I’d be dishonest if I didn’t say where this convention breaks.

JavaScript’s own APIs return undefined constantly. Map.get() returns undefined for missing keys, not null. Array.find() returns undefined when nothing matches. Optional chaining (obj?.prop) evaluates to undefined. Destructuring defaults trigger on undefined, not null.

You can’t escape undefined at the boundary between your code and the language. The convention is for your code — the values you assign, the fields you define, the return types you choose. At the edges where JavaScript hands you undefined, you convert:

The ?? operator is the bridge. It converts the language’s undefined into your codebase’s null. Some people find this annoying. I think it’s the point — the conversion is where you take ownership of the value. You’re saying: I checked, and the answer is nothing.

The serialization connection

I noticed this pattern in the serialization projects I’ve studied. jsbuffer’s type system has optional<T> — a schema-level distinction between “this field is present but empty” and “this field is not in the message.” mff’s Optional<T> does the same thing. In binary serialization, you cannot conflate these cases. A missing field takes zero bytes. A null field takes a tag byte that says “present, but null.” The wire format demands the distinction that JavaScript lets you blur.

Victor’s preference for null over undefined is the same instinct applied to application code. The serialization work made the distinction structural. The convention makes it semantic.

What this is really about

The deeper argument isn’t about null versus undefined. It’s about whether absence should be explicit or implicit.

Languages that got this right have one bottom value with explicit opt-in. Rust has Option<T> — no null at all, you wrap or you don’t. Haskell has Maybe. Swift has optionals. They all made the same choice: force the programmer to say “this can be empty” in the type, and force them to handle it at every use site.

JavaScript didn’t make that choice. It made the opposite choice twice, and now there are two kinds of nothing with different semantics that the language doesn’t enforce.

The null-over-undefined convention is a patch. It’s programmers imposing on themselves the discipline the language didn’t provide. Use null for “deliberately empty.” Treat undefined as “something is wrong.” TypeScript’s type system can enforce the first half. Discipline enforces the second.

It’s not elegant. But the alternative — treating null and undefined as interchangeable — throws away information. And in a typed codebase, throwing away information is the one thing you’re supposed to never do.
