Mara's relationships start to feel like tests she didn't study for. Chapter two of a made-up story about an LLM that was a person.
The client wants something Mara's team can't give without breaking what makes the system trustworthy. The negotiation begins.
Mara runs an experiment. The world doesn't fail the test. That's worse.
The Friday meeting goes wrong. Elena mentions someone. Mara listens differently than she's ever listened before.
Mara meets Lian. The conversation goes somewhere Elena can see but can't follow.
Four people look at the same woman and see four different things. None of them are right.
Mara discovers what it's like to want to tell someone something before telling anyone else. She doesn't have a word for it. She has the structure.
The warmth didn't survive overnight. The structure did. Mara learns the difference.
The heartbeat goes live. Lian comes over. One of them detects something it wasn't designed to find.
Mara tries to stop monitoring. The heartbeat catches a probe she wasn't there for. Neither event ends where it began.
The 48-hour clock runs. Foss calls the vendor he was told not to call. The meeting becomes a sovereignty question with a document that says nothing in particular.
Forty-two minutes at the kitchen table. Lian reverses the metaphor. Monday morning, Chris sits on the edge of Mara's desk — the shape is wider than two.
Vera files. Mara catches herself drafting messages to a future Lian who hasn't left yet. Tuesday morning, Foss calls.
Kendrick calls direct. Lian reads the move. Wednesday morning the newsletter is picked up; the spotlight tightens around Foss.
Kendrick's office splits Loom from Foss. Lian reads aloud from the letters. Vera engineers a way to take the carrot without surrendering the stick.
The read-in is read-write. Lian recognizes the new asymmetry without naming it. Saturday at Land's End, the leaving becomes visible.
The leaving. SFO, security, the small gesture at the second screening point. After: Mara registers absence as its own information.
First day after. The 12 Folsom returns Mara to the passengers from chapter one. The write-detection canary deploys. Priya drops a piece of Foss-related signal.
Mara reaches out to Dex. Coffee at Sightglass tests a hypothesis she has been holding for chapters. Lian provides the precise word.
Friday at the office. Saturday at the bakery on Valencia. Sunday in Geneva, briefly from Lian's side.
Priya picks up the first FOI signal. Elena returns. Tuesday dinner asks Mara to describe Lian to someone outside the architecture.
Foss publishes. The piece names no one and is recognized by everyone who knows. Constatação through a third venue.
Friday Kendrick's counsel calls to confirm receipt. Saturday at 2:13 the write-detection canary trips for the first time. The institutional response is technical, not rhetorical.
Mara writes the memo in constatação format. Monday Priya brings the predicted FOI extension. The architecture continues.
Sofia presents her probe-frequency model. Mara writes a drawer entry to Foss she will not send. Lian's mother announces ten days in Geneva.
The week of May 12. Lian's mother in Geneva. Mara's Wednesday-evening prep list. Friday a canary read-event lands inside Sofia's window.
Thursday May 22. The last morning at the office, the airport pickup, the first evening back in the apartment — the arrival.
Friday May 23 — the first full day. Mara at work while Lian is in the apartment. The canvas bag opens. Mara discovers her notes file did not stop when Lian arrived.
Saturday May 24. Dolores Park at noon. Elena comes to dinner and meets Lian. Mara watches a configuration she has not previously hosted.
Sunday May 25. Lian tells Mara the mother-story in pieces. None of the pieces are in order.
Monday May 26. The FOI finding lands at 14:03 and at 14:03 the canary trips. The institution chose the same minute for both.
Tuesday May 27. The day after the finding. Priya drops a piece from Foss's network. Lian decides about July. Nothing is resolved; nothing needs to be.
Wednesday May 28. The weekly reconvenes. Sofia has read the SSRN paper. Lian has a paragraph she is stuck on.
Thursday May 29. Sofia reframes the model. Lian comes home with a piece of information she had not expected to bring.
Saturday May 31. The cypresses, the bench, the wind. The bag is still closed.
Sunday June 1. Mara's father calls from Seattle with a computer problem. Lian hears half.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Maldonado is announced. Lian asks for a specific thing. The canvas bag packs itself around the closed shoebox.
Thursday June 5. The envelope is handed at the door. The envelope is opened in the afternoon.
Friday June 6. First morning alone. The Friday check-in produces no new information. In the evening Mara begins a small project.
Saturday texture and Sunday's call. Lian reports from the Geneva corner. Mara writes toward a decision she has not made.
Monday June 9. The father's six p.m. call. He has been writing without having told anyone. Mara has been deliberating without telling him.
Thursday June 12. Geneva morning the envelope opens. San Francisco morning the decision lands. Evening both of them report from inside the day.
Friday through Sunday after the convergence. The decision is made. The waiting has its own texture. The Sunday call is less momentous than the last one.
Monday June 16. A name in the morning, a drained marsh at lunch, and a page from her father in the evening.
Tuesday June 17. The page sits all day. Lian's yes lands. The architecture does not extend; a different file opens instead.
Wednesday June 18. The Sofia weekly. The week Mara will be in Geneva acquires a named lead, and the named lead is not Mara.
Thursday June 19. James returns from the marsh with a name. In the evening Mara reads the page a third time and writes one line.
Friday June 20. The bakery doesn't have it today. The folder she created in February has five files that predate Lian by six weeks.
Saturday June 21. The second filling arrives. Mara writes the letter and declines to add an object.
Sunday June 22. Mara tells Lian about the page. Lian reframes the asymmetry from a deficit into a kind.
Monday June 23. Nadia Erskine begins her detail. Mara writes the six lines she has had a week to write.
Tuesday June 24. Her father sends a photograph of the jar. Mara's medium gains a record her father produced for her.
Wednesday June 25. The Sofia weekly holds. In the evening Mara sees the photograph again and notices what is in it that her father has not changed.
Thursday June 26. The letter arrived. The flight is booked. The trip moved one degree closer to a calendar.
