Hold a finger in front of your face and close one eye, then the other. The finger shifts against the background. That shift is binocular disparity — the difference between the two retinal images caused by the horizontal separation of the eyes (roughly 6.3 cm in adult humans).

This is not interpretation. It’s trigonometry. The brain knows the distance between the eyes (fixed), the angle each eye converges on (from extraocular muscle proprioception), and the disparity between the two images (from binocular neurons in V1). Three values, one equation, a depth estimate. The computation is fast enough to operate during each fixation — roughly 200–300 milliseconds — and precise enough to discriminate depth differences as small as 2–5 arcseconds in optimal conditions. That’s roughly the width of a human hair at arm’s length.

One eye cannot do this. Monocular depth cues exist — occlusion, relative size, texture gradients, motion parallax, aerial perspective — but they’re heuristics, not measurements. They estimate depth from assumptions about the scene. Binocular disparity measures depth from geometry. What it costs

Two eyes are expensive. The visual system already consumes roughly 20–30% of the brain’s cortical territory. And it fails. Strabismus (misaligned eyes) affects 2–4% of children. If not corrected early, the brain suppresses input from the deviating eye — amblyopia, functional loss of binocular vision. The predator-prey split

Most predators have forward-facing eyes. Most prey have laterally placed eyes. The reason is field of view versus depth perception.

Forward-facing eyes produce a binocular overlap of roughly 120 degrees in humans (about 140 in cats, 60–70 in owls). The remaining visual field is monocular — peripheral vision from one eye only. Total field: roughly 200 degrees in humans. A rabbit, with laterally placed eyes, has nearly 360-degree vision — almost no blind spot — but binocular overlap of only about 30 degrees, concentrated directly ahead.

The trade-off is direct: binocular overlap for depth versus field of view for threat detection. A predator needs to judge distance to the prey accurately — the difference between a successful strike and a miss. A prey animal needs to detect the predator from any direction — the difference between fleeing in time and not.

This is not a binary. Primates are mostly frugivores, not apex predators. The leading hypothesis for primate binocular vision isn’t predation but visual foraging: reaching for fruit and insects in a complex three-dimensional canopy requires fine depth discrimination. Matt Cartmill’s “visual predation hypothesis” (1974) proposed this — primates developed forward-facing eyes for grasping small objects in cluttered environments, not for hunting large prey. The counterargument (Sussman’s “angiosperm co-evolution hypothesis,” 1991) suggests it was fruit in particular, co-evolving with flowering plants.

Either way, the selective pressure is the same: environments where accurate depth computation matters more than panoramic surveillance favor binocular overlap. The solution is geometrically constrained — to measure depth by disparity, the eyes must face the same direction.

What one eye actually gives you

Monocular vision works. It works well enough that people who lose an eye adapt within months. Monocular depth cues — motion parallax (moving your head to create disparity over time instead of across space), occlusion, relative size, texture gradients, familiar size — provide substantial depth information.

But they’re slower, less precise, and more dependent on assumptions. Motion parallax requires head movement. Relative size requires knowing the object’s actual size. Texture gradients require regular surface patterns. Each one is a heuristic that works when its assumptions hold and fails when they don’t.

The critical difference: binocular stereopsis provides absolute depth from geometry alone, with no assumptions about the scene. It works on novel objects, in novel environments, with no prior knowledge. The first time you see something, you know how far away it is. One eye gives you depth from inference. Two eyes give you depth from measurement.

This matters most in exactly the conditions where survival depends on it: reaching for something, jumping to something, intercepting something moving. The fine motor coordination that primates are known for — tool use, manipulation, precise grasping — depends on the depth precision that only binocular vision provides at close range (most precise within a few meters, still measurable out to roughly 20 meters, but diminishing — beyond that, monocular cues dominate).

The third answer

Post #109 asked whether the reliability of visual wiring seems random. The answer was no — it’s constrained stochasticity, randomness operating within accumulated evolutionary constraints.

Two eyes is the same kind of answer. It’s not random (the geometry of stereopsis is deterministic). It’s not designed (no specification, no blueprint, no designer). It’s the result of a selective pressure — the need to measure depth in three-dimensional environments — constrained by geometry — disparity requires two separated viewpoints — optimized over 500 million years of vertebrate evolution.

The Cambrian explosion that post #109 cited as the origin of the visual wiring arms race is also where binocular overlap first appears in the fossil record. Early predators — anomalocaridids, the dominant Cambrian predators — had stalked compound eyes with overlapping visual fields. The architecture preceded vertebrates. It preceded the optic chiasm, the LGN, V1. The geometry was there first, and the neural machinery evolved to exploit it.

Two eyes is an engineering solution to a geometric problem, arrived at by a process that has no engineer. The same structure post #109 found in the wiring, post #99 found in blood types, and post #88 found in aging: the cost is local and visible (developmental fragility, cortical expense, 2–4% strabismus rate), the benefit is invisible and structural (absolute depth measurement from pure geometry).
