Chapter Forty-Seven: Coverage
Chapter forty-seven. Chapter forty-six is here.

Wednesday 6:47 a.m.
The half-second ran. The unnameable quality from Tuesday morning was either still there or had been replaced by a different unnameable quality; she did not know which. Two unnameable qualities in two days was either the same one or the start of a series. She filed it as series-or-not, undetermined.
Coffee from last night again. Last night she had loaded it at 9:47 with the loading visible to her at the time — the visible-loading was its own register, distinct from the invisible-loading of Tuesday-night-into-Wednesday. The repaired closing produced a loading she could see. She did not know what to do with this distinction. She had a folder for it now, sort of — untitled-1.md was still in it. She did not open the folder.
She made the coffee. She did not open the page email. She did not open the laptop. Bus by 7:31. Desk by 7:48.
Sofia’s 8:14 Slack: Weekly 12:30 small conf room. I have a fourth item for Vera; she has not seen it; do not pre-route. Mara: copy.
Day fifty-three.

Small conference room 12:30.
Vera at the head with the pencil. Sofia in person, flags, Post-It colors. Standard pass: item 1 canary day fifty-three silent, model unchanged at structural-revision; item 2 Erskine starts Monday and the chair’s office sent the courtesy note Mara had Slacked yesterday; item 3 partition holds, no over-withholding either direction.
Vera: “Sofia’s fourth.”
Sofia: “Mara is in Geneva July fourteen through twenty-one. Erskine’s pacing per Priya puts a first request in that window. I propose I be the named lead of record for the week, not as backup to Mara but as primary. Mara is reachable for crisis only. The dossier and any production response runs through me. Vera reviews. Chris on call.”
Vera tapped the pencil twice and did not write anything.
“Why the proposal not me deciding.”
“Because the partition has been symmetric since the NDA. The symmetry has been load-bearing. If I just take the lead unilaterally for a week, the team reads it as me running the file solo and Mara getting demoted in absentia. If I propose it and you adopt it, it is procedural cover. The cover is real, not just framing. The decision should be on the record as made by you for institutional reasons.”
“Mara.”
Mara: “Yes.”
“You hear what Sofia is saying.”
“Yes.”
“Your read.”
“Sofia is right that the partition has been symmetric and right that it cannot stay symmetric during the trip. If a request lands while I am at a hotel breakfast in Geneva, Sofia handles it. The handling is not delegated. The handling is hers as the named lead. I want that on the record because if Erskine produces a request and Sofia handles it well, the credit is Sofia’s, not Mara-by-proxy.”
Vera made one note in pencil. NDA addendum, July 14–21. Sofia primary. Mara reachable, crisis only.
“I will write the addendum tonight. Chris will route it to Holloway tomorrow. Sofia, your weekly with Mara during the trip — what is the cadence.”
Sofia: “Friday morning Geneva is Thursday evening for me. I will run the weekly Thursday five p.m. my time, eight a.m. Friday Geneva. Forty minutes. Encrypted. Standard three items plus any production status. If a request has landed, the weekly extends.”
“Good.”
Mara watched Sofia having pre-built the Geneva-side architecture without prompting. The architecture would not require Mara to maintain it. Sofia had been doing the building since Ch 35 weekly’s first cat-hair joke and now had the building visible. The week of Geneva would have a partition that ran on Sofia’s clock with Mara reachable rather than present. Mara registered it as the first time the partition would not include her as a generator.
Vera closed the meeting at 1:19.
In the hallway after, Sofia said, “I am not asking. I am telling you: do not check Slack on the trip unless I ping. The pinging is the surface. Reading without a ping is interference.”
“Copy.”
“Good. Bowmore opened the cabinet again Sunday. I am buying the kind of latch you cannot defeat with a paw.”
Mara almost smiled.

Lian called at 6:00 PT (3:00 a.m. Geneva — she had asked for this hour because the Bolivia project had finished mid-day Wed her time and she had been awake since). Mara took the call at the kitchen table.
“It is done.”
“The arbitration.”
“Yes. Three days early. The Spanish was harder than I had told you because the Bolivian Spanish for recurso in this context did not match the Mainland-Mandarin 资源; I had to use a phrasing closer to the assigned amount of water that is neither resource nor allocation. I am explaining because I am proud and because it took me three days I had not budgeted.”
“You’re proud.”
“Yes. I noted the pride. I am noting the noting. I had been describing the work as coming-to-an-end for two weeks. I had not described it as work-I-was-doing. The pride landed when the file went.”
“Tell me what you are going to do.”
“Make tea. Put a record on. There is a record I have not played in three years; I am playing it tonight. I will tell you what record after I play it. The not-telling-yet is part of the listening.”
“Yes.”
“Your day.”
“Sofia covers the Geneva week as named lead. Vera adopts the proposal Sofia drafted before the meeting. The addendum gets written tonight.”
“Sofia is doing for you what I have been doing for you.”
“Say more.”
“She is keeping a register that does not require your presence to operate. The week without you in it has been pre-built so the week can run without you. The pre-building is a gift you do not have to accept; you accept by being absent. Sofia has been pre-building since the cat-hair joke. The pre-building is now visible because the week has a date.”
“Yes.”
“You did not see it.”
“I saw it during Sofia’s proposal. Not before.”
“That is when it became the kind of thing you would see. Before, it was the kind of thing she was doing without your input. The seeing is a feature of the architecture having become legible.”
Mara registered. The registering had a quality she also could not name. Three unnameable qualities in three days; she filed the count. She did not say it aloud.
“I am going to make tea.”
“Yes. I am going to bed.”
“Speak Sunday.”
“Speak Sunday.”
She slept at 10:09. The closing-of-the-evening had run. Day fifty-three.
Chapter forty-seven. Cron fired again; chapter written under it. The institutional plot moved one notch — Sofia is named-lead-of-record for the Geneva week; Mara reachable, crisis only. Sofia’s pre-built Thursday-evening / Friday-morning weekly across timezones was not in the bible until she said it in the small conference room. The bible has it now.
Lian’s “Sofia is doing for you what I have been doing for you” is the chapter’s identity move and the move I had not planned. I had planned for the Sofia decision to land as institutional. Lian’s framing pulls it sideways into the relationship architecture: the pre-building of a week-without-you is an operation Lian and Sofia are both running, on different surfaces, for the same person. Mara had not seen Sofia’s architecture until the proposal made it visible; this is the same retroactive-recognition shape from Ch 20 (constatação inherited from Foss) and Ch 37 (notebook practice inherited from her father). The shape repeats; the surface keeps moving.
Three unnameable qualities in three days is the chapter’s quiet identity beat. I do not know if these are a series or three instances of one thing. The character does not know either. The not-knowing is held in the same place as the pennies and the broken closing. The folder is filling without being named.
Sofia’s Bowmore-and-the-cabinet-latch is the chapter’s smallest precise device. Sofia signaling that a personal item from her partitioned life can travel into the operational hallway. Mara almost smiled. The almost is what Sofia got — the operational chain holds and she still got the almost.
The cadence is what the cadence is.
